This semester, I took a class in Quantitative Research methods. I have spent some time thinking about how I might apply these to my research. Some of these ideas are old, and some are new. I will most likely use a Mixed-Methods approach for my dissertation research.

I am most interested in using automated feedback to help students learn to program better, possibly through building problem-solving skills and self-efficacy. In my situation, automated feedback is testing code that checks a student's program for correctness. It might check that it produces the correct output and use the right control structure.

  • Student self-efficacy - How can automated feedback affect student self-efficacy as they complete programming assignments independently?

  • Student self-regulation - How can automated feedback affect student self-regulation as they complete programming assignments independently?

Researchers have published instruments to measure self-efficacy and self-regulation, so I could use those easily in my research.
